About St. John's Wort
Hypericum Perforatum, also known as St. John’s Wort, is a flowering plant belonging to the Hypericaceae family and is known in Anatolia with names such as binbirdelik herb, blood herb, sword herb, sheep shearer, lamb shearer, mayasıl herb, puren, St. John’s wort, wound herb. This plant, which is thought to be a hybrid species originating in Siberia, is found in the temperate regions of Eurasia, most of North and South America, South Africa, Australia, and in Turkey, especially in the Aegean and Mediterranean regions.
It is considered an invasive weed because it is considered harmful to livestock. It may interact with prescription drugs and cause allergic reactions. However, it has been used for centuries for therapeutic purposes within traditional medicine. Its history dates back to the Ancient Greek period 2000 years ago.
In the 21st century, commercial production continues. Research on the biological effects of a very powerful chemical called hyperforin produced by this species, as well as other chemicals it contains, is still ongoing for modern medicine and the pharmaceutical industry.
